NBA Summer League Announced

LAS VEGAS - June 15, 2010 – Twenty-two NBA teams, including 11 that appeared in the 2010 NBA Playoffs, will compete in this year’s NBA Summer League. For the second consecutive year, a team of NBA Development League Select players will also participate in the action taking place at the Thomas & Mack Center and the COX Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Marketing partners included in the event are adidas, EA SPORTS, Gatorade and T-Mobile.
A 58-game schedule of action will tip off on Friday, July 9, with four games scheduled at COX Pavilion. Teams slated for action on opening day include the Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Hornets and Phoenix Suns.

“While the NBA Summer League continues to grow, its core mission remains the same: allowing NBA teams to evaluate young talent and free agents, giving rookies the chance to get acclimated to the NBA and providing veterans a chance to fine-tune their games,” said Stu Jackson, Executive Vice President of NBA Basketball Operations.
This year’s event will feature the Washington Wizards, who won the top overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. Other participating teams with top five selections in this year’s draft include the Minnesota Timberwolves (fourth overall pick) and the Sacramento Kings (fifth overall). Additionally, 10 of the top 14 picks are expected to participate in Las Vegas this summer.
“NBA fans have the chance to get a sneak peek at the league’s newest stars in an up close and family-friendly venue at NBA Summer League,” said Gail Hunter, NBA Senior Vice President of Events and Attractions.
Joining the above-mentioned teams scheduled to appear in Vegas this summer are the Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards.

Is Utah Headed to the Pac 10?

----which would actually become the PAC 12 if the invite is given as expected on Wed.

This hurts UNLV and the MWC conferece badly. I also wonder how BYU will feel about this. Not happy in Provo. They will be left in the dust as the Utes get the coveted spot in the new PAC 12 Conference in 2011.

"Forclosed Upon" Pets Looking for a New Home

Las Vegas Pets Examiner
Sheryl Greenblatt

It’s hard to find anyone who has not been, in some way, affected by the current economic state of our country. While people struggle to make house payments, feed their families and keep their heads above water, wonderful local groups are trying to make things easier on the four legged members of society. One such group, Foreclosed Upon Pets Inc. is making a difference in the Las Vegas Valley.

FUPI (rhymes with puppy) was founded in October of 2008. Everett, one of the founders, explained how they got started. “We saw the power of the internet in saving the lives of pets. Information would be gathered about abandoned and homeless dogs and then emailed to a long list of animal lovers throughout the valley. It had great results!” FUPI wanted to take it one step further, turning available pet information distribution into a movement. The Animal Cyber Sanctuary was born. This “cyber sanctuary” assists volunteers in forwarding animal emails, creating and posting adoption flyers and getting the word out about pets that need loving homes.

FUPI has taken a pro-active approach to the homeless pet problem. They offer a place for families, who must relinquish their pets due to economic hardship, to list their animals and find them good homes before the pound ever comes in to play. Re-homing the animal before it ends up in a shelter saves countless lives and countless dollars.

In February of 2009, FUPI became a 501 (c) (3) non profit group. With the rising number of animals affected by foreclosure, FUPI realized that they were going to need a physical residence to house all the pets. In May of this year, they purchased a house (FUPI House) to act as a staging area for the animals before they head out to foster homes or forever homes.

51's Baseball and ESPN Zone-News and Notes

Two rather dissapointing things going on in the world of sports right now.

1) Don Logan downgraded from President of the Las Vegas 51's to GM. The problem with minor league baseball in Nevada has nothing to do with Don---in fact, the success it has had is BECAUSE of Don. Certainly, they need a new stadium for this team to survive here and Stevens Media (team owners) are foolishly making Don the skapegoat right now.

2) The closing of the ESPN Zone at New York, New York hotel and casino. News came Wed. of this closing. In fact, the hotel didn't even know it was closing until they saw the press release. The ESPN Zone has been losing tons of money during these difficult times.

I did a number of TV shows at the ESPN Zone, including an hour long special opening night. Click here to watch the motorcycle jump of Mike Jones on opening night of the ESPN Zone

MIKE JONES JUMP-CARY HART INTERVIEW

Also, Saturday night at the Paris---Cheap Trick opens it's run of the show Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. I saw this show at the LV Hilton a few months ago. Great show. Cheap Trick is one of the most fun bands out there, performing perhaps the most fun album ever.

“We are very happy to have Ron Futrell heading this show,” said TVS Television Network Chairman Tom Ficara. “Ron has a long history of being a solid journalist in Las Vegas but more importantly, he is a kind and decent person who looks to solve issues. His work with the local Crimestoppers organization has been more than exemplary and we hope he can bring the same effectiveness, drive, compassion, and spirit to the Las Vegas Justice Bureau TV show.”

Many important topics will be covered on the show, including the issue of homeless veterans in Las Vegas, runaway teenagers in Las Vegas, and the lure of fugitives to Las Vegas.

The first episode of Las Vegas Justice Center will be “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Jewish Federation”. It will cover the hate based leadership and employee abuse allegations that have scandalized the Las Vegas Jewish Federation for the past two years.

“We want to be hard hitting, we want to be thorough, and we want to be compassionate in our reports,” explained Ron Futrell, the host of the show. “Las Vegas has a lot of unique opportunities and a lot of unique challenges and we hope to be able to help the community solve some social ills via this show.”

Las Vegas Justice Center is one of several original programs produced by the TVS Television Network for TV4U.Com. Others include Hollywood Palace, Make That Spare, Jackpot Bowling, Las Vegas Comedy Showcase, Challenge Cup Bowling, Queen of the Hill Pool, Grand Prize Bingo, Video Zoo, 8 Ball Challenge, and Scotch Doubles 9 Ball Challenge.
