Bunco or Bust Oct 2nd at CasaBlanca Resort

Bunco or Bust set Oct. 2 at CasaBlanca Resort

MESQUITE, Nev. – Hundreds of women – and some men -- from several states gather once a year to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research while also having a very enjoyable time playing Bunco at the CasaBlanca Resort.
And Bunco or Bust which is now in its third year is expected to draw a capacity field Saturday, Oct. 2 in the Grand Ballroom of the CasaBlanca.
Bunco has reached incredible popularity over the past three years.
“Basically, this is a social gathering which gives participants the opportunity to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation while also playing Bunco and bid on silent auction items.
“A portion of the costs for the hotel accommodations is also donated to the charity each year. This event is so popular that we fill the grand ballroom!”
Last year’s Bunco or Bust event drew more than 200 participants while raising more than $8,000 for Breast Cancer Research.
The interest for Bunco or Bust is so enthusiastic that some teams come dressed in pink apparel from head to toe sporting tiaras and pink feather boas.
“Some teams have names like “Save the Ta-Ta’s” or “Shake Your Dice,” added Evans, who is general sales manager for Black Gaming. “There is no end to the support for this event.”
A cash bar will be available in the Grand Ballroom during the event offering various libations including the most popular Bunco Juice.
Black Gaming officials are encouraging participants to enter early considering the turnouts for previous events.
As is the case with each of the Bunco events, the list of participating sponsors is long.
Among those helping with the event this year is Michael E. Minden Jewelers in Las Vegas; the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Las Vegas Motor Speedway; Cookie Lee Jewelry in St. George, Utah;
Further information can be found at www.casablancaresort.com and click special events to find the Bunco page; or by calling 888-711-4653, ext. 14.
The dice will begin to roll at 6 p.m.

CAPTION: The Bunco or Bust benefit raised more than $8,000 for Breast Cancer Research last year at the CasaBlanca. This year’s event is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 2 in the Grand Ballroom of the CasaBlanca Resort.

BYU to leave MWC in 2011

Brigham Young University will be leaving the Mountain West Conference in 2011 and going to the Western Athletic Conference in every sport EXCEPT football.

BYU will compete as an Independent school in football and participate in the WAC in the non-football sports.

This move will badly weaken the MWC, of which UNLV is a member. In 2011 the MWC will lose both BYU and Utah which is headed to the Pac 10----or Pac 12 by the time the Utes arrive on the scene.

Plenty of changes going on right now in the college landscape.

"Sweet Peppers" Returns to Defend Title in Mesquite BBQ

Sweet Peppers team returns to Mesquite to defend title in Smokin’ in Mesquite BBQ Championship Labor Day Weekend

Jim Ballog and his Sweet Peppers BBQ team are headed for Mesquite on Labor Day Weekend to defend the team’s title in the Smokin’ in Mesquite BBQ competition at the CasaBlanca Resort.
The event marked yet another brilliant marketing effort on behalf of Mesquite Resort Association last year, and Ballog and teammate Adrian Sanderson are making the trek again this year chasing their share of a huge $40,000 purse.
“We’re two old guys traveling in a mini van,” laughed the 59 year-old Ballog while heading for another event in Dillon, Colo. earlier this month. “Our trip to Mesquite is an all-day trip. We try to plan it out where we get there to set up and cook before heading back Sunday morning.”
If ever there was an ideal set up for a major automobile manufacturer to sponsor a good-hearted and dedicated couple of travelers, it’s most definitely Ballog and Sanderson. The team had an overall 12th place finish in Colorado, and Ballog and Sanderson are hungry for a repeat win in Mesquite.
“We travel in an ’09 Van which already has 90,000 miles on it,” said Ballog while traveling through the mountains of Colorado. “We’re on our third set of tires. We were actually working with a Chevy-Chrysler dealership in Albuquerque for a possible sponsorship.”
Sanderson, a 65 year-old resident of Pueblo, Colo., works as a motorcycle helmet rep and also sells motorcycle apparel; while Ballog sells and services electric motors in Albuquerque. When you add in sauce specialist Ben Mosier from Nebraska, Sweet Peppers is comprised of a top-rated team as evidenced by its success last year at the Smokin’ in Mesquite BBQ championship.
While the victory was a big one, the experience was also memorable for more reasons than one. Now in their seventh year of BBQ competition, Mesquite offered its own set of challenges.
“We weren’t used to the heat,” said Ballog. “Then, we had what appeared to be a tornado hit in the middle of the night, so we had our hands full. We even went out and bought a bunch of fans.
“There will be people from all over the world coming to Mesquite for this year’s event.”
No doubt. The Mesquite event sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Association instantly became the place-to-be after the 2009 tallies had been totaled and the fever grew even more when it was announced that a round-robin format would also tie the Mesquite event with the Memorial Day Best Dam Barbeque held in Boulder City.
Sweet Peppers also competed in the Best Dam BBQ event and is now vying for the overall championship purse of $3,000.
Key to any BBQ competition is the science that goes into the planning. There are logistical challenges not to mention making sure vehicles are ready. Throw in the elements needed for the BBQ competition, and it is evident the path to Mesquite actually leads to Lynchburg, Tenn., the home of the Jack Daniels invitational championship contest Oct. 22-23.
“This is a hobby now, but there is no question that a lot of work goes into something like this,” said Ballog, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa. “If you travel like we do, you’re on the road every weekend usually traveling 900-1,000 miles.
“It’s a fun deal. I cook a lot and really enjoy it. This sort of thing gives a guy a chance to do something without having to buy a $25,000 boat. He can spend that much money on a smoker, but he doesn’t have to. And besides, he can have an even better time when he includes his family in the competition.”
Of course, the key is making sure the team is properly equipped for the trip to Mesquite.
“I think we spend about $120 for the meat for each contest,” Ballog said. “Then, you have to make sure you have the Cheetos, bags of cookies, the iced tea and the Jack Daniels.
“We try to buy our pork butts and briskets at Sam’s Club and our pork ribs at Costco. Low quality meat is not something you want to have when you’re more than 500 miles from home.”
With the inaugural event under its belt, Sweet Peppers is heading for Mesquite convinced the team will win again.
“I believe we’re going to come into Mesquite ready for anyone,” Ballog predicted. “We’re not cocky. We’re just a very consistent team that comes in and cooks hard. I think we’re ready for anybody this year.”
Consistency is certainly important in the BBQ competition and Sweet Peppers has been a grand champion four times while also collecting numerous second (known as the Reserve) and third place finishes. In addition, the team has captured the Arizona Team of the Year honors as named by AZ BBQ of Phoenix.
Ballog never stops trying to improve his BBQ skills.
“My poor family eats chicken every weekend,” he says, “and the family is good at telling me if something is any good. You have to be objective and appreciate what people tell you.”
Yet another key is making sure the team doesn’t panic when a challenge is presented.
“We handle everything very well,” said Ballog. “We’re getting older, so we don’t get excited. If we’re having a problem with the fire or the meat, we make a quick decision and stick with it.”
The Smokin’ in Mesquite event will kick off Thursday, Sept. 2 with an eight-hour cooking class taught by noted meat expert Dave Bouska, a native Oklahoman who was ranked among the top competitors in Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) BBQ events last year.
Bouska will share his expertise with all ages beginning at 8 a.m. in a seminar-like event that is expected to last until about 4 p.m. A $150 fee will be charged to those participating in the unique class.
Further information regarding this year’s event can be found by visiting www.mesquitebbqchampionship.com or by calling Christian Adderson at 888-711-4653, ext. 51.

Back to School Book Drive Extravaganza!

Back-to-School Book Drive Extravaganza
Event Launch

Las Vegas, NV (August 6, 2010) –

Zaba’s Mexican Grill and Joe’s Crab Shack announces the launch of the Back-to-School Book Drive Extravaganza in honor of Spread the Word Nevada. Beginning Friday, August 6, 2010, an in-store book drive will be hosted by all area Zaba’s (5) and Joe’s Crab Shack (3). Each restaurant will be a collection site until August 22 and will offer food special incentives for every customer that donates a new or gently used children’s book (k-6). Our combined efforts are devoted to raising money to purchase new books and collecting new and “gently used” books for as many of our “at-risk” Las Vegas children as possible.

The book drive will conclude with a Spectacular 2-day Weekend Event on August 21 and 22 - just before the start of a new school year - designed to raise much needed money and awareness for this very special cause. 100% of all the collected books will go to Spread the Word Nevada and 100% of donated funds raised will go directly toward purchasing books for our kids.

Saturday, August 21st, from 4pm-10pm, we will co-host a social event at our adjacent Grand Canyon Flamingo Centre locations (I-215 & West Flamingo) that includes live music from local and national acts, food & drink specials, and a live auction emceed by Vegas TV anchor/celebrity, Ron Futrell. Sunday, August 22nd, from 11am-7pm, we will have a kid-focused day filled with fun events including numerous arts and crafts, performances by local children’s Singing and Dance groups, professional BMX stunt performers featuring Ricardo Laguna, face painting, balloon artists and ongoing raffle winner presentations.

Bye Bye Bali Hai? The Inside Story--

I don't know whether to laugh or cry as I hear the story of Bali Hai golf course on the Strip.

The talk now is to tear up the course and turn it into an industrial complex. More cement and steel in a city with 20-30% vacancies for industrial buildings (I know, that number is probably low.)

The course is south of Mandalay Bay, in a part of the Strip where buildings have to be kept low because of the flight path of McCarran International Airport.

Oh---I have a long, and rather passionate connection with this story and that property. This should've long ago been a Formula One race track and golf course.

Let's take you back to 1998. I was the only TV reporter to sit down with Bernie Ecclestone, who is the owner of Formula One auto racing. Ecclestone was offering the race to Las Vegas because he wanted the US Grand Prix to be run on The Strip. The land would be a golf course with a race track running through it. 51 weeks a year it would be a Championship Course, one week a year Las Vegas would light up with the biggest sporting event in the world that we could ever hope to have (the Olympics and World Cup Soccer ain't coming here.) 150 million people around the world watch Formula One every week (that number is probably low as well.)

Could we use an event like this on an annual basis in Las Vegas? I don't know, you tell me how things are working in this city right now. Could we use an event that would bring in $100-200 million on a weekend? Formula One wanted Las Vegas, but the politics of Las Vegas did not want Formula One.

Those were good times back then, that we thought would never end. Economically we are now Detroit with neon lights.

The folks who ran Mandalay Bay Group at the time opposed the project because they said there would be too much noise and traffic. Noise and traffic? I recall a commentary that I did at the time on my local sportscast laughing at the idea that anybody would oppose an event because of noise and traffic on The Strip. "If we don't have noise and traffic, then we are in deep trouble in this town," is part of what I said at the time.

What do we hear now on that site? Crickets. Not much noise and traffic, and that's the problem. The County is making no money off tax revenue and the developer is almost 50 million dollars in the hole. Enter the industrial complex idea to try to salvage something out of the land. Once again, County Commissioners are going to be there to protect us all and make the right decision on this. (Note---this is actually a totally different County Commission this time because the people who made this first horrible decision have been term-limited out, or are in jail for taking bribes from a strip club owner----fate?)

Bottom line, and I said this at the time, an awful decision made by people who had selfish interests in mind and not the best interest of the people of Las Vegas. Mandalay Bay wanted the property for their own personal golf course (locals can play it, but the price for a round is 3 large.) Las Vegas Motor Speedway officials also opposed F-1 in Las Vegas because they saw the race as competition for their new NASCAR event that had arrived in Las Vegas 2 years prior.

An industrial complex? Are you serious? If I were a member of the County Commission I would call Bernie Ecclestone or his representative, Sig Rogich and beg them to reconsider and think about taking over that property and bring F-1 to Vegas. The US Grand Prix flopped in Indianapolis for a number of reasons, but it would work in Las Vegas. This city is made for an event like this, and F-1 is made for Las Vegas.

Yes---Resurrect this racing idea.

Vegas Sports Shorts!

First, Stuart Appleby shoots a 59 on Sunday to win the PGA Tour event. That is only the 5th time that has happened in PGA tour history. Brings back some memories of Chip Beck who was one of those golfers who shot a 59. He did it at the old Sunrise Country Club during the Las Vegas Invitational in 1991. The club later became Stallion Mountain Country Club and is now no longer a golf course. Beck had 5 pars, 13 bridies that day. His last birdie was on 18 when he hit a simple little 3 footer for that 59.

Second, Jerimiah Masoli will be going to the Rebels, but not the UNLV Rebels. He's the former Oregon Ducks quarterback who has been kicked off the team after multiple arrests. He led the Ducks to a Rose Bowl win. There was talk that he may play for the Rebels in Vegas, instead, he is on his way to the Rebels of Ol Miss. Can't wait for college football season to get underway here soon! A lot of optimisim with new coach Bobby Hauck taking over the UNLV Rebels this year (let's hope they do better than another 2-9 season, we've had enough of those lately.)

Third, a good fight over the weekend at Mandalay Bay between Marquez and Diaz----but what's next for Las Vegas boxing? Hard to say, not much on the horizon. Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the only major fight left on the horizon and it will not be happening until at least next year and there is no guarantee that it will be in Las Vegas.

Fourth, hot shot baseball player Bryce Harper may be headed back to the College of Southern Nevada baseball program. That's what he's saying on his Facebook page.
"Probably headed back to CSN to try to win a National Championship!!!!" Harper, the top overall pick by the Washington Nationals in last year's First-Year Player Entry Draft, has until Aug. 15 to sign.

Harper is 17 years old, he batted .443 with 31 home runs and 98 RBIs this spring for CSN in leading them to the Junior College World Series.
