A Cowboy Christmas 1990. Wayne Newton

Take a rare trip back in time to 1990 Las Vegas. "A Cowboy Christmas".

The show was produced by the UNLV Alumni Association and Lonnie Wright. Ron Futrell and attorney Carl Piazza hosted the show from Wayne Newtons "Shenandoah". The hour long program includes interviews with local troops on their way to serve in the first Gulf War. There are also numerous visits by UNLV Rebel basketball players (the same team that won the National Championship).

It's quite a treat to take a step back in time in Las Vegas. We included the commercials because they certainly are a great part of Las Vegas history.

Click on the HISTORY tab here on LocalsLoveVegas.com and you will find the program there.

Another "Bla" Choice For UNLV Athletic Director

UNLV's search for an Athletic Director is almost over. Wow! Down to the Final Three.

The Final Three have supposed resumes from other great schools. Their names are Bla Bla Bla, Bla Bla Bla and Bla Bla Bla.

Pretty exciting, huh?

After the new UNLV President (who's name is Bla Bla Bla) dumped the three great local choices for Athletic Director, why does it matter whom he choses from here? We've seen this song before. Many times. Great an AD from out of state who has brilliant ideas and doesn't know the city and he leaves after a few years because nothing he did worked. Remember how Jim Weaver was going to build Rebel Football and he brought us the Rebel Towel to wave outside your car before the game? Where's your Rebel Towel now? I could go on and on.

Bottom line, it's sick that Steve Stallworth, Tina Kuzer Murphy and Jerry Koloskie didn't get a more serious look from Bla Bla Bla. Any of the three would've been great for the same reason, and for different reasons. They each would've brought unique talents to the position but they each know the community better than any Bla Bla Bla could. In 20 years on the job Bla Bla Bla couldn't know the city as well as any of the Big Three.

Sometimes university presidents (especially new ones) are intimidated by people who know the community better that they do. They need an AD who will be beholden to them and not the big Whale Booster. Hey, both can work and at successful programs they usually do.

Stallworth is a former UNLV QB who understands marketing and has tremendous passion for everything he does. Kunzer-Murphy worked for years in the Athletic Department and runs the successful Las Vegas Bowl. Koloskie has worked in the Athletic Department for three decades and knows it better than anybody. All three are great people, proven leaders, and Las Vegans to the core. If there were no good choices, I could understand Bla Bla Bla going with Bla Bla Bla, but he had some very, very good options. He just chose not to go there. His choice.

When the announcement is made....my reaction, and the Las Vegas reaction will be, bla.

Pole Position Raceway Grand Opening in Summerlin

Free Motorcycle Stunt Show with Kane Friesen & $9.95 Races All Weekend

Pole Position Raceway will be kicking off the grand opening of its second indoor kart track this weekend in style with a free motorcycle stunt show featuring factory Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Kane Friesen and introductory racing for only $9.95 on Saturday and Sunday.

The action begins this Saturday at 2pm in Summerlin, and promises to be an extraordinary event. The high-performance kart track is located at 7350 Prairie Falcon Rd. (on Tenaya Way between Lake Mead Blvd. and Cheyenne Ave.). “Everyone at Pole Position Raceway appreciates how well the Las Vegas community has embraced the indoor karting experience,” said Kurt Busch, NASCAR champion and company shareholder. “To be able to expand to a second location in Las Vegas in our current economy is an incredible achievement!”

This is the second indoor speedway Pole Position Raceway has opened in the Las Vegas Valley since December 2007. The company’s original Nevada location, 4175 South Arville, is a 60,000-square-foot, climate-controlled entertainment experience filled with exclusive racing memorabilia, state-of-the-art video games, billiard tables and HD televisions scattered throughout for continuous sports viewing.

Pole Position Raceway’s Summerlin location closely resembles its original facility, boasting all of the same modern conveniences. Most importantly, the Summerlin location will also use the company’s state-of-the-art Italian-made, ECO-friendly electric karts.

Pole Position Raceway is a “true racing experience" enjoyed by both expert and novice racers alike. More than 200,000 participants have raced almost one million miles around the company’s quarter-mile, European-inspired indoor track at its Arville location.“We look forward to expanding the reach of indoor karting,” said Brad Mark, managing partner Pole Position Raceway Las Vegas. “Our newest location is everything our customers have come to expect from Pole Position Raceway – and more!” NASCAR Champion Kurt Busch, Supercross Champions Jeremy McGrath and Chad Reed along with ESPN/ABC personality Jamie Little are among the celebrity investors of Pole Position Raceway Las Vegas.

Winter hours are now in effect for both Las Vegas locations. Pole Position Raceway’s Summerlin location is open Monday through Thursday from 1p.m.-10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11a.m.-midnight, and Sunday from 11a.m.-8 p.m. The Arville location is open Sunday through Thursday from 11a.m.-11p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11a.m.-midnight.

Both tracks offer adult and Junior (for kids at least 48" tall) karts. For more information, call (702) 227-RACE (7223) or log on to www.PolePositionRaceway.com.

Charges Dismissed Against Krolicki

CARSON CITY - Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said today she is reviewing the decision and considering her options in light of a ruling by a Clark County judge dismissing criminal charges against Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki.

Masto spokeswoman Edie Cartwright had no other comment on the decision by Clark County District Judge Valerie Adair dismissing the indictment for Krolicki's alleged mismanagement of a college savings program while serving as state Treasurer.

Krolicki, who is expected to run for reelection as lieutenant governor, issued a statement saying he can now put the awful experience behind him.

Ryan Erwin, a long-time campaign consultant to Krolicki, said Krolicki was very pleased with the decision and will now take some time to recuperate with his family over the holidays.

"It's been a tough year," he said. "They tried to wreck him politically and personally. Today is a good day."

Krolicki can now run for reelection with a clean slate, Erwin said. Krolicki has announced he intends to run again but will probably evaluate that decision again with his family, he said.

"I fully expect him to run for reelection," Erwin said.

Asked if Masto might pursue an appeal or some other legal action to keep the case going, Erwin said anything is possible.

"Most Nevadans believe this was a ridiculous partisan prosecution," he said. "I can't imagine anyone in good conscience spending additional tax resources on a crusade like this."

Masto is a Democrat and Krolicki is a Republican.

The charges against Krolicki were filed in December 2008 after a 2007 audit of the $3 billion, state-run college savings program. He was charged with four felony counts, two for misappropriation and falsification of accounts by a public officer, and two for misappropriation by a treasurer.

No state funds were missing but Krolicki is accused of not following state budgeting rules.

A trial was to get under way on Dec. 14.

"I would not have been able to make it through this process without the support of many who have stood by me," Krolicki said. "I am grateful for the outpouring of support and appreciate everyone who has been so encouraging throughout this awful process. I am proud to have my name cleared and that we can begin moving forward."

'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire'

By Christian Toto http://whatwouldtotowatch.com/

The main character in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” has every right to give up.

She’s verbally and physically smacked around by her layabout mother, and what her father does to her on a regular basis is almost inhuman.

Yet there’s a light blazing within Claireece “Precious” Jones, a beacon powered by a will to survive that might just lead her out of the living hell she calls home.

It’s the kind of redemptive story we’ve seen many times before, but never told with the dignity director Lee Daniels injects into the material.

It’s also the best picture of 2009, and with a month and a half left in the calendar year it’s unlikely to be topped.

Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) has next to nothing to look forward to in life. She’s pregnant with her second child, a baby born from her father’s frequent rapings, is extremely overweight and stands to get tossed out of her high school.

But when she lands in an alternative school with a teacher (Paula Patton) who sees a good student buried under layers of neglect, Precious starts to come alive. She’ll need her teacher’s help, along with the kindness of a local social worker (Mariah Carey, unrecognizable sans her “Glitter” accoutrements) and her fellow students.
But there’s very little about “Precious” that follows paths trampled on by previous story arcs. Daniels, who previously gave us the deliriously daffy “Shadowboxer,” employs a daring visual style, blending fantasy sequences with ripe compositions that can easily fall into camp - or worse.

Nearly every bold choice pays off.

Mo’Nique, playing Precious’ welfare addicted mother, is a monster of the first order. But the comedienne shrewdly underplays some of the character’s more intense behavior. And when she tries to woo Precious back into her maternal embrace, it’s achingly real.

The story moves purposefully, with Precious reclaiming her humanity piece by piece.
Precious, the most difficult role, represents a remarkable first performance by the untested Sidibe. She’s wounded and angry, hopeful and hopeless, the actress switching smoothly across the spectrum from scene to scene. Her face is overblown and sad, but when she smiles the audiences sees a soul eager for escape.

The best movies, even those steeped in tragedy, give you the feeling of being alive, of being exposed to something that makes you cherish the good in your life all the more. “Precious” leaves audiences with precisely that experience, and it’s the first film of 2009 that shouldn’t be missed.
