Movie Review-"Whiteout"

by Christian Toto www.whatwouldtotowatch.com

The first time you see Kate Beckinsale in the new thriller “Whiteout” you’d swear you were watching a late-night Cinemax “masterpiece.”

The fetching actress, for no reason of narrative importance, strips down to her underwear and then heads for the shower.

The actress’ beauty is beyond critique, but as a movie goer you certainly expect the worst.
But “Whiteout” isn’t awful. It’s just another average thriller comprised of elements we’ve seen before - save one.

Setting the story in Antarctica ratchets up the tension - and texture - until its garden-variety shocks feel fresh.

Beckinsale plays U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko, the head law officer at a remote research facility eagerly awaiting her return ticket home.

And who could blame her? The temperature outside the camp is brutally cold - the life endangering kind. And she’s forced to hang out with drunken researchers and elder statesman Doc (Tom Skerritt), one of the few sober minds in the facility.

Everything changes when they discover a dead body near the camp. It’s murder, they say, and now Carrie has to solve the crime before she can head home. But catching the murderer means stepping outside, a task which makes everyone vulnerable.

“Whiteout,” similar to John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” makes prime use of its frozen esurroundings. The action sequences, although dizzying to watch, are far superior to the generic thrills in recent pictures like “The Taking of Pelham 123.”

Our heroes must cling to support lines strung between buildings in order to survive the hurricane-like winds whipping around the camp.

And Beckinsale, who doesn’t look like a hard-nosed cop, has enough grit in her performance to make the questionable casting moot.

Yes, the dialogue throughout “Whiteout” is as stale as a frozen donut. But a few scenes prove surprisingly tender, like Doc’s attempt to stitch up Carrie after a nasty accident.

“Whiteout” feels like a September release, a low expectations ride better suited for late-night channel surfing. Seeing it on the big screen will still leave audiences blowing into their hands for comfort.

PT Tausinga Retires from LV Motor Speedway

PT Taunsinga has retired from Las Vegas Motor Speedway and gone home to feed her flock.
Heart and soul of LVMS considered driving force of track’s creation

LAS VEGAS -- Patricia “PT” Tausinga -- the woman believed by many to be the heart and soul behind the creation of Las Vegas Motor Speedway -- has gone home to feed her sheep and spend more time with her husband, David, at the couple’s home in southwest valley.

The colorful Tausinga, who hotelman Ralph Engelstad put in charge of watching his $200 million investment while also spearheading the construction process of LVMS, retired recently from the facility in the northeast Las Vegas Valley. As senior director of administrations for the 1,500 acre facility since ground was broken in 1994, she has done everything from guide the construction to sign out golf carts; direct traffic and arrange meetings to identify a few of her many responsibilities. And while there was no official going away party when Tausinga left LVMS, the energetic and multi-talented former Minnesota farm girl is recalling the memories generated working with a long list of VIPs ranging from Engelstad and fellow hotelman Bill Bennett to street-hustler and dream weaver Richie Clyne not to mention various auto racing-related big-timers such as Richard Petty, AJ Foyt, Rusty Wallace, Carroll Shelby and anyone else who had a tie to motorsports.

While the track now hosts a NASCAR Sprint Cup race annually and also stages two NHRA drag races along with a NASCAR truck event, it doesn’t seem that long ago that the area was desolate and Las Vegas was without a major auto racing event. With Bennett and Engelstad providing the cash and Tausinga riding herd over the project, the “Diamond in the Desert” became reality even though many naysayers doubted it would ever happen.“I’ll never forget our first meeting to discuss the building of the track,” says Tausinga, who arrived in Las Vegas from Minnesota more than 40 years ago. “We had Hugh McDonough, Shelby, Richie, (engineer) Dave Weir, (architect) Merlin Barth, (local medical expert) Dr. Dale Carrison, (advisor and PR guy) Mel Larson, (Clark County Health District exec) Claire Smooth and (interior designer) Paul Seibert all at the Imperial Palace.”In what might have seemed like a group running on a wing and a prayer, a dream was becoming reality and Tausinga was about to embark on a journey that would not only bring world-class auto racing to the area but also illustrate the woman’s talent as a multi-tasker.“Richie called me and told me to get to K-Mart and buy a pair of shorts and tennis shoes and get to what was about to become a race track,” she recalls with enthusiasm. “He had me get into his Suburban which he was driving like a wild man before we finally got stuck.”Clyne coined the name “PT” saying that “Patricia” was too common and Tausinga was too hard to remember. From that day on, Patricia Tausinga has been addressed as “PT” by everyone from janitors and window washers to holier-than-thou auto racing types representing race cars, sponsorship opportunities and sanctioning bodies.

PT Tausinga has never feared anything during her career.

Movie Review-"Love Happens"

By Christian Toto www.whatwouldtotowatch.com

Jennifer Aniston’s role in “Love Happens” is the kind she would have jumped at after “Friends” first season aired.

Yes, she’s the co-star in a major motion picture, but the film affords her little more than that bragging right.

She’s not even the main attraction in this weepy drama. That dubious honor goes to Aaron Eckhart, cast as a self-help guru without a trace of irony.

Eckhart plays Burke, a motivational speaker whose claim to fame is writing a book helping people recover from the loss of a loved one. Suffice to say he lost his own wife three years ago, and before you can say, “Dr. Phil, heal thyself” he’s knee deep in a workshop to help others get better.

Enter Eloise (Aniston), a beautiful flower shop owner who glibly shoots down Burke’s advances by pretending she’s deaf.
Stay classy, Eloise.

Naturally, their paths keep crossing, leading to a series of chemistry-free scenes which seem to indicate a romance is blooming. But is Burke ready for a new relationship? Well, first he’ll have to let a parrot free in the woods, walk over hot coals and make lemonade out of lemons. Literally.

“Love Happens” leaves no emotional cliche unturned, but Eckhart is such an engaging performer we’re left rooting for Burke despite ourselves.
Eloise is a series of minor personality tics in search of a character. We’re told she clings to unavailable men, and she likes to scribble big words on the walls of the hotels where she supplies floral arrangements.

That’s all you get, folks. And Aniston isn’t the kind of actress to find the layers behind such an artificial construct.

Eckhart can, though. He nearly carries the film until we’re force fed the usual trite resolution.
“Love Happens” tackles big themes with little ideas, and it would be nice if the love in question touched, or even glanced, our own hearts.

110 Airmen Return to Vegas

Family and friends welcomed home 110 airmen to Nellis Air Force Base Sunday night just in time for the holiday.

Some families said the traditional Labor Day barbecue means even more this year because they will spend it with loved ones who had been serving a four-month stint in Iraq.

The airmen, assigned to the 58th and 66th Rescue Squadrons and the 763rd Maintenance Squadron, performed combat rescue operations, medical evacuation and humanitarian missions while at Joint Base Balad, north of Baghdad.

While deployed, they provided more than 2,000 hours of alert support, completed more than 400 missions and saved five lives through medevac missions.
